Formal Assessment
The sample of areas chosen in order to write the progress test is the following: Present Simple, Present Continuous, Adverbs of Frequency and a lexical set related to School Subjects. As regards the areas from the syllabus left aside, we did not include the following: lexis and expressions typical of exchanges used when you apologize and make phone calls. None of the skills (writing, reading, speaking and listening) where assessed on their own, that is to say for comprehension purposes. To evaluate how to apologize and make a phone call, I would assess them through a speaking task.
The progress test that we devised takes the form of a quiz to be carried a thirty-minute period. It consists of three exercises:
¨ Word Sequencing: the students had to order the words given so as to form sentences. Here we assessed how to form sentences in the present simple and adverbs of frequency.
¨ Gap-filling: the students had to fill in the gaps with only one word. Here the lexical set assessed is school subjects.
¨ Variation of gap-filling: the students had to fill in the gaps with only one word. However, this is not a gap-filling exercise because they also had to put the verbs into the correct formIn order to assess the progress tests, we used a numerical marking scale. In the first exercise, the students will be deducted points for the following mistakes: incorrect order and spelling. In the second one, they will be deducted points in case they make a mistake regarding the lexical items as well as their spelling. Finally, in the third exercise they will lose points in case they make a mistake in relation to the tense of the verb, the spelling and its placement according to the context.
The aims of all the activities of the quiz were to assess the students’ progress and their knowledge of syntax –especially in the first exercise-, of the linguistic content presented, of the lexical sets they dealt with. This progress test also enabled us to check their understanding of the new grammatical structures and tenses. These quizzes are very good to test the students’ performance in the written work.
